Liz and I traveled to New York city by train to the newly renovated Grand
Central Station.
We spent two days on Manhatten and stayed overnight at the Wellington Hotel.
After we arrived we took a walking tour of Grand Central neighborhood and saw:
Rockefeller Center skating rink, St. Patricks Cathedral, we passed some of the Broadway
theaters, The Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.. two of New Yorks famous
sky scrapers.
In the afternoon we took a ride on the Circle Line around the island of Manhatten
passing just a few feet from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and saw the sun
setting over the skyscrapers in Manhatten.. Quite a sight.
Late that night we joined crowds of people on the corner at Times Square and looked up
at the skyline.
We started the next morning at a coffee shop where we had bread and coffee. After
breakfast we boarded a city bus to downtown Manhatten. On the ride, Liz pointed out many
landmarks including The Flatiron Building, City Hall, China Town, Greenwich Village, and
Little Italy. We got off at the World Trade Center.
Leaving the busy Trade Center area we walked along the waterfront through a park that
was very serene to a small museum at Battery Park.
We took a "speedy" New York taxi back to midtown where we met another
Chatter, Lucy V at the UN and were treated to lunch in the Delegates Dining Room. After
lunch Lucy went back to work and Liz and I took the guided tour through the UN. We saw the
main meeting halls, the gifts from the member countries. In the front of the building in a
prominent location we viewed the sculpture of the Swedish artist C.F. Reuterswärd
"Non-Violence" done in 1980 - a pistol with a knotted barrel - done in memory of
John Lennon.
