The main and only real city on Gotland is its capital Visby, with 22,000 of Gotland's 60,000 permanent residents living here. The city's population
increases to over 500,000 visitors during the summer months.  Almost the entire city is one large museum with ruins and medieval buildings in almost
every corner of the streets, which are enclosed with the beautiful ring wall.

Before one enters the town of  Visby one sees the wall that completely surrounds the town. The wall was built in the 13th century and has been remarkably preserved.
And inside the wall is a medieval town found almost as it was in the mid-fourteenth century. During the tourist season the gates of the wall are closed and no vehicular traffic is allowed in this part of the town unless one is
a resident. It is a beautiful sight.

This plaster cast Gotland sheep is a familiar fixture in Visby... They are used to separate the vehicular section of the town from the pedestrian section and in a number of places just for decoration. (And I happened to like them a lot)
.

This is the front of Gisela's little Visby house... It is actually not so little.. the rooms are smaller and the ceilings lower than the house in Katthammersvik but it is absolutely charming and plenty of space for a holiday
house. Gisela loves this little house.
We attended a meeting of the Seniornet group in
Visby. How nice to meet so many delightful people (21 in all) We had an interesting discussion about the differences and similarities of getting seniors online in Sweden and in the US. As it is everywhere.. it is hard to find funding to offer classes but we talked about some of the things we have done here in Connecticut to open schools and libraries for seniors and offer classes with volunteer teachers..
It is one of many fields of raps that were in full bloom all over the countryside.. We first
saw raps fields on our way to Katthammersvik on the day we arrived in Gotland. We passed this one often as we drove to and from Visby. Isn't it astonishing??? I did not tire of looking at this great beauty.. Raps is harvested for
the oil it contains.
