Pictures from our Days in Stockholm

THE MUSEUM OF NATIONAL ANTIQUITIES is not far from Gisela's home in Stockholm so we walked over to start our sightseeing there. The museum has an international reputation for its prehistoric treasures. |
THE
GOLD ROOM is probably the most impressive part of the museum. It glitters
with the greatest collection of Sweden's gold and silver treasures from
the Dark Ages and
Viking era. |

Standard tickets for Stockholm's excellent subway, buses, streetcars and ferries are very reasonable in cost. Special discount tickets are available at all station ticket counters and newsstands. One can also get a 24 hour ticket and people over 65 pay half price. The busses run often and take one anywhere in the city. |

The
Swedish Royal family, King Carl XVI
Gustav, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Phillip and Princess Madeleine, live in Stockholm in the Royal Palace. We were fortunate to view the changing of the guard on a holiday (Ascension Day) which was most impressive The musicians and the guard entered the palace courtyard on horseback with their brilliant uniforms and silver helmets. It was grand. |

We had lunch at Gondolen, high above the harbor and looked out over the sights, the parliament building and Old Town. |

Gamla Stan (Old Town) is famed for its narrow, winding streets. A strong sense of history has helped preserve the streets much as they have existed for hundreds of years. The shops and coffee houses are favorite sites for tourists in Stockholm. |
As we toured the city, we came across this statue of one of Sweden's famous native sons, the poet and musician Evert Taub. Also a favorite tourist photo-op... We had spent a little while shopping in Stockholm's oldest and most well known department store. For high quality and equally high prices, visit NK (Nordiska Kompaniet), which has everything from clothes to Swedish crystal and is very beautiful |

We
picked up some wonderful veggies and fruit at the Högtorget, or hay
market. The plants and flowers were beautiful against
the background of the blue-gray building which is the Konserthuset where the Nobel Prize ceremony takes place every December. A banquet and dancing take place later in the evening at the Stadtshuset (town hall). |
|
One of the highlights of the visit to Stockholm was a night at the magnificant Royal Opera House where we saw Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata. It was a wonderful performance, beautifully staged. The prima donna, Lena Nordin, is as beautiful as she is talented. |
