On the first full day in Sweden,
Gisela had arranged a cruise
through the Stockholm Archipelago.
The Archipelago consists of approximately
24,000  small islands along the coast near
Stockholm and reaching out
into the Baltic Sea.
Some of the islands are
too small to have even a small
building, others are large
enough for a summer home
and some have several homes
and even a small store which
gets its supplies by boat from
Stockholm. The archipelago is
a real national treasure. People
stream out of the city and onto the
water during the summer months.
Ferries, small boats, yachts,
houseboats.. all are common
sights among the islands.
The ship sailed through these islands and reached the Finnish island of Äland (Oland) at about 2 PM. There we changed ships for the journey home.. We had a sumpteous smorgesbord on the return trip, consisting of too many wonderful dishes to count. The best was the fruits of the sea; salmon, cavier, codfish, shrimp, herring, crayfish and more. There were also many meat dishes and veggies of all kinds.. The dessert table was laden with beautiful and delicious treats.
After dinner we listened to live music and were deliighted with a group of young dancers who were very energetic and wore wonderful costumes.
We arrived back in Stockholm at about 7 PM. At this hour the sun is still high and it is light until after 10 PM.
